An eco-wellness retreat in Blaenavon is due to open in the coming months, thanks to a council-run business startup course.

The Retreat at Little Oaks, which is currently operating as holiday accommodation, will include a sauna, ice bath and cabana as well as offering spa treatments.

It comes after co-owner Andy Parfitt-Jones attended a Torfaen Business Direct startup course earlier this year.

He said: “The course gave us the structure and confidence we needed to turn our vision for The Retreat at Little Oaks into a reality.

"The mix of expert guidance and peer support helped us refine our vision, strengthen our business plans and foundations, and push forward with opening a wellness eco-retreat that brings something truly unique to Blaenavon."

The next eight-week Business Startup Programme starts on Wednesday September 18.

Aimed at individuals who are thinking about starting a business, or have recently started on their self-employed journey, the free course, which has been organised by the council’s Business Engagement Team, and delivered by Welsh Ice, covers business concept, branding and marketing, sales and finance.

The sessions will be held at Croesyceiliog Community Education Centre, in Cwmbran, every Thursday morning from September 18, and will include insights from industry experts and local entrepreneurs.

Cllr Joanne Gauden, Executive Member for Economy, Skills and Regeneration, said: "We know there is a wealth of untapped talent in the area, and this programme provides individuals with the guidance and support they need to turn their ideas into reality.

"Whether you have already made a start or just have an idea for a new business, we’re excited to see the positive impact this initiative will have on our local community."

Hope Eckley, Welsh ICE Academy manager said: "We believe that with the right support, anyone can turn a great idea into a thriving business. The startup programme is a fantastic opportunity for local residents to take the first step toward making their entrepreneurial dreams a reality."

The programme is part of the Business Support Project which has received £218,000 from the UK Government through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund.

There will also be another business startup course in the New Year.
