A member of Torfaen Council's Community Meals Service has been thanked for raising the alarm when he noticed a change in one of his clients.
Adrian Herbert was on his regular route when he visited the 67-year-old who lives at a residential complex in New Inn, Pontypool.
The man, has a learning disability, is a type 2 diabetic, and also suffers from epilepsy.
Adrian, who has worked for the service for 4 years, said, “I knew something wasn’t right as he was not his usual cheerful self. We usually have a conversation, but I could tell he wasn't his normal self.
"I trusted my instincts and called a family member, who also spoke to him and realised something was amiss so decided to call an ambulance. I was relieved I was there at the right time.”
The gentleman, who the family has requested is not named, was initially admitted to intensive care and has remained in hospital for over eight weeks but is making good progress.
His family, who live away, has since sent their heartfelt gratitude to the service, saying had Adrian not acted immediately, the outcome could have been very different.
Council Strategic Director for Adults & Communities, David Leech, said: “Adrian exemplifies the spirit of our community meals service. His quick thinking and compassion made a real difference and we’re proud to have him as part of the team.
“The service continues to be a lifeline for many residents, ensuring their well-being beyond just a warm plate of food. Many families in Torfaen rely on the meals service to act as a lifeline, knowing that their loved ones are looked out for.
“In a world where isolation and vulnerability persist, Adrian’s case inspires us all to be more attentive, compassionate, and proactive neighbours. This kind of approach forms part of our wider Torfaen Community Well-being Strategy, where we are working with, and supporting residents, to build stronger, more resilient communities.”
The Community Meals Service, which is provided by the local council, deliver between 30 and 40 nutritious meals per day to residents, 365 days of the year.
The cost of a meal is £6.30 for a main meal and dessert. They also offer a variety of tea-tray choices including sandwiches and frozen desserts at an additional cost.
