Hundreds of learners from across Torfaen have today turned out to collect their A-level and BTEC results.
Around 100 pupils from years 12 and 13 studying A and AS levels at Ysgol Gymraeg Gwynllyw, collected their results at the school this morning – with many happy faces all round.
Tia Goodwin’s decision to switch from Chemistry to History at the beginning of her final year in sixth form proved successful, as she achieved an A in the subject, alongside an A in English and a C in Biology.
Tia said: “I’m really happy and proud with my grades and I cannot wait to go on to study English Literature at Cardiff Metropolitan University in September.”
More than 2,000 learners studying A level, BTEC and vocational qualifications at Coleg Gwent campuses also collected their results, with many attending Torfaen Learning Zone.
67% of students attending Coleg Gwent campuses achieved A*-C A-level grades, while more than 1,000 learners completed a BTEC qualification.
Molly McAlorum is just one of Torfaen Learning Zone’s delighted learners getting ready to embark on a new chapter after achieving three distinctions.
The Level 3 Business Diploma student, who has secured a business apprenticeship at GE Aerospace, said: “I started my time at Coleg Gwent not really knowing what I wanted to do as a career – but my time at the college opened my eyes to a whole world of opportunities which I wouldn’t have had otherwise.
“After securing the interview with GE Aerospace I had amazing support from my personal tutor, who spent hours helping me prepare. This gave me the very best opportunity of being successful and as I stand here today with my equally successful diploma results, I feel so proud and grateful.”
In addition to BTEC and A-level success, over 150 adult learners completed their Access to Higher Education courses with Coleg Gwent and will progress on to a degree course at university.
Cllr Richard Clark, Executive Member for Education at Torfaen Council, said:
"I would like to extend my heartfelt congratulations to all the young people across Torfaen who have collected their A level results today at Ysgol Gymraeg Gwynllyw and Coleg Gwent. Your hard work, dedication, and resilience have truly paid off, and you should all be incredibly proud of your achievements.
“Remember, this is just the beginning of a bright and promising future. As you embark on the next chapter of your lives, whether it be further education, training, or entering the workforce, I wish you the very best of luck.”
A level results across Wales show that 97.4% of students achieved A* - E grades. 10.1% of candidates achieved an A*, and 29.9% achieved A*-A grades.
The A and AS level data, published by the Joint Council for Qualifications (JCQ), show that results are similar to those that were awarded to students before the pandemic in 2019.
Comparisons to any previous years’ results should be approached with caution due to the differing methods of assessments and circumstances.
The total number of A level examination entries in Wales this year was 32,235, a decrease of 2.2% from 2023 (32,960) however, entries are consistent with 2019 (32,320).
At A level, Mathematics remains the most popular subject across Wales, with English Literature and Physics both seeing an increase in entries.
In Wales, the overall pass rate for males and females is broadly similar with 96.4% of subject entries by males achieving A* - E grades, compared to 98.1% of entries by females.
