Baby Loss Awareness Week

Posted on: Tuesday 10 October 2023

Torfaen Council is joining other organisations across the UK to light up iconic landmarks pink and blue to mark Baby Loss Awareness Week.

Pontypool Civic Centre will be lit up from this evening to show support for bereaved parents and families, and to raise awareness of pregnancy and baby loss.

In the UK, it is estimated that 1 in 4 pregnancies end in loss during pregnancy or birth.

Each year the campaign runs from 9 to 15 October and provides another opportunity to remember and commemorate the lives of babies who have died during pregnancy or shortly after birth.

Councillor Anthony Hunt, Leader of Torfaen Council, said: "Baby loss is a devastating experience for parents and families, and it is important to remember and support them.

"By lighting up our buildings pink and blue during Baby Loss Awareness Week, we are sending a message to bereaved parents and families that they are not alone, and that their babies are not forgotten.

"We are also hoping to raise awareness of baby loss and the impact it has on families and communities. We want to encourage people to talk about baby loss and to break the stigma that surrounds it."

Torfaen Council is encouraging everyone to get involved by lighting a candle at 7pm on Sunday 15 October to take part in the Global ‘Wave of Light’ event.

Aneurin Bevan University Health Board have also launched a new baby loss support group at Woodland Road Sports and Social Cub in Cwmbran, which takes place at 7pm on the second Monday of each month.

Other ways to get involved include joining the conversation on social media using the hashtag #BabyLossAwarenessWeek or by donating to a baby loss charity.
