Torfaen Remembers

Following the sad passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, we would like to provide you with some information linked to the week or so ahead.

Books of Condolence

There are three official books of condolence which will be at Civic Centre Pontypool, Cwmbran Library and the Blaenavon World Heritage Centre.  The books of condolences will be available to the public during these venues normal opening hours.  These will be available to sign up until the day after Her Majesty’s funeral at which point the books will be sent to The Royal Palace.

We would encourage anyone unable to sign these books to sign the online book of condolence on the Royal Family website.

Flowers

Pontypool Park’s memorial gates (opposite Civic Centre) has been identified as a site for the public to place flowers if they wish.

Silence

Periods of public silence will be announced by the Palace and we will share that information as soon as possible. 

Proclamation

On Sunday afternoon, following the regional proclamation in Newport a local proclamation will be read out in the Civic Centre, Pontypool by the Leader of Torfaen Council, Cllr Anthony Hunt at 4pm.  

You can watch the proclamation via the Council’s webcasting pages and it will be screened live on the council’s Facebook page.

Flags

The flags at Civic Centre, Pontypool, are currently flying at half-mast and will stay at half-mast until after Her Majesty’s funeral.   

In recognition of the new Sovereign, Union flags will be flown at full-mast from the time of the Principal Proclamation at St James’s Palace on Saturday until one hour after the Proclamations in Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales on Sunday, after which flags will return to half-mast in mourning for the death of Her Majesty The Queen.

Council services and meetings

Frontline council services are expected to operate normally until the day of The Queen’s funeral.  

An update on changes to services on the day of the funeral will be shared next week.

Meetings of the Council’s pension, cabinet and scrutiny committees due to take place next week will be rescheduled as soon as possible after The Queen’s funeral. 

Football matches and events

The Greenmeadow Community Farm Show due to take place this Sunday has been cancelled.

All football matches in Wales have been cancelled this weekend by the FAW. Bookings will roll over to the next fixture clubs require. Any queries, please email kate.austin@torfaen.gov.uk or phone 01495 766720.

Pontypool Library fun day which was due to take place tomorrow (Saturday 10 September) between 9.30 - 12.30 has been cancelled, however, it will be rearranged for a later date. Keep up to date by following @TorfaenLibraries on Facebook.
