Shell Grotto
  • Location:Pontypool

Access to the Shell Grotto is by walking only and involves steep climbs over uneven ground and is unsuitable for the less abled and young children. Originally built as a summerhouse for the Hanbury family, the Shell Grotto is a listed Grade II building. Its simple exterior gives no clue to the wonderful interior - walls and ceilings decorated with shells, whilst the floor depicts flower and heart shapes made from bones. More detailed historical information is available from Pontypool Museum (01495 752036) The Grotto may not be open to the public, please check before walking up if specifically intending to visit.
