Pupils and staff from two primary schools in Cwmbran have helped launch the Welsh Government's annual Be Mighty Recycle campaign.

This year's drive is focused on increasing food waste recycling, which still accounts for around a quarter of all general rubbish.

As part of the campaign, a Mighty Food Waste Mission activity pack has been produced for primary schools, including exciting lessons and a new competition, with the chance to win a family day out.

Be Mighty mascots Gwyn the Bin and Cari the Caddy joined pupils at Blenheim Road and Coed Eva Primary Schools for a food waste recycling lesson this week to help unveil the new resources.

Teacher Phoebe Lewis said: "We really want them to learn how to do it in school and how to do it at home from a young age."

The mascots were joined by cook and Dirty Vegan presenter Matthew Pritchard, who said: "A lot of our general waste is full of food and 80 per cent of that is edible. Don't put it in the bin, put it in the caddy and we can turn it into green energy."

News cameras were also there to capture the first lesson and you can see how it went on the ITV Wales website.

Councillor Mandy Owen, Executive Member for Environment, said: “The pupils and staff at Blenheim Road and Coed Eva primary schools were definitely the stars of the show! Both schools already do a fantastic job at recycling and reducing food waste and I am sure they will be great Be Mighty Recycle ambassadors at home.”

This week marks Recycle Week and the start of the Be Mighty Recycle campaign, which runs until Thursday 30 November.

As part of the campaign, Torfaen Council will be sharing top tips about how residents can increase their food waste recycling and help Raise the Rate.

All food waste collected in Wales is turned into green energy to power homes and communities.
