A school caretaker who took on the role from his father has retired after almost 44 years.
Dale Philpott, 60, became the caretaker of Abersychan School in 1982 when his father Fred retired after 10 years in the role.
This week, staff marked Dale's last day with a celebratory afternoon tea, sharing memories and presenting Dale, a lifelong Pooler fan, with a Grogg figurine of the famous Pontypool front row, among other gifts.
Reflecting on his time at the school, Dale, a former pupil, said: "I’ve seen a lot of change over the years, even when it used to be a leisure centre back in the day. The school has gone through so much and it feels special to have served here for so long.
“I feel a massive part of the school and I’ve met some of the most amazing people along the way. It’s more than just a job; it has become a major part of my life and made me who I am."
In the role, Dale was responsible for numerous tasks, including maintaining the site, opening and closing the premises, ensuring a safe environment, performing repairs, and supporting contractors on site.
Dale added: "I cannot thank the staff and my team enough for their time and the support over the years, and I’ve always tried to reciprocate that support to everyone, including the students.
"Knowing that I have given my all to this school is what means the most and leaves me content enough to go out with my head held high."
Headteacher Rhodri Thomas, said: "Dale has been an integral part of Abersychan School for over four decades. He has been fully committed to his role as caretaker throughout his distinguished career and this has very much been to the benefit of many members of the community who have either attended the school, or have children who have studied here.
“He always greets staff early in the mornings with a welcoming smile and I’ve personally enjoyed many conversations about his beloved Pontypool RFC. The Governors, staff and students at Abersychan School wish him a long and happy retirement.”
