Local information from the Welsh Index of Multiple Deprivation 2019
The latest Welsh Index of Multiple Deprivation was released by the Welsh Government on 27 November 2019. The Index, which has been developed to support the effective local targeting of resources and policy, provides the official measure of relative deprivation for small areas in Wales. WIMD 2019 updates the Index published in 2014. As before, WIMD is made up of eight separate domains (or types) of deprivation: Income; Employment; Health; Education; Access to Services; Community Safety; Physical Environment and Housing. Each domain is compiled from a range of different indicators.
The 2019 Index uses the Office for National Statistics 'Lower Super Output Area' (LSOA) geography as its reporting unit, which sub-divides Wales into 1,909 separate geographical areas with an average population of 1,600. There are 60 of these LSOAs within Torfaen, all of which currently nest within Torfaen’s 24 Electoral Divisions or Wards.
In WIMD 2019, the following Torfaen LSOAs are in the most deprived 10 per cent in Wales:
Torfaen LSOA (Wales Ranking, 1-191)
- Trevethin 1
- Upper Cwmbran 1
- Pontnewydd 1
We have prepared a series of WIMD 2019 local area profiles, which detail LSOA rankings within each of Torfaen's Electoral Divisions for the multiple Index and by individual domain (therefore reflecting specific kinds of deprivation).
The 2014 (and earlier) WIMD results are available on request. However, it is important to note that the deprivation rankings from the 2019 Index should not be directly compared with those from previous indices, due to methodological reasons including changes in the Index domains and indicators over time.
