More than 190 volunteers were recognised for their contribution to communities across the borough at the Torfaen Community and Volunteer Awards.

Organised by Torfaen Voluntary Alliance, the awards took place at the Parkway Hotel, Cwmbran, with 11 categories celebrated, including two special High Sheriff of Gwent Awards.

Now in its sixth year, the awards recognise the individuals, groups and organisations who go above and beyond to support others and strengthen their communities.

Cwmbran RFC won the Heart of the Community Award for its work supporting more than 300 children through its Tiny Crows, Mini and Junior sections.

Alongside rugby, volunteers provide hot meals on Sundays, work with local schools, support community groups and run a warm hub.

James Rawbone, from Cwmbran RFC, said: "While I was fortunate enough to accept the award on the night, the recognition belongs to every one of our volunteers who give up their time freely to keep the club running and support our wider community.

“Whether they’re coaching children, serving meals, supporting veterans or helping someone who may be feeling isolated, their contribution goes far beyond rugby."

Adult Volunteer of the Year Award went to Nathan Edmunds, whose volunteering spans health, charity, sport and community life.

Nathan provides companionship to residents living with dementia at Cwmbran House Care Home, has established a gardening club and supports a number of charities through fundraising and ambassador roles.

Nathan said: “Winning this award was a very proud and special moment. Volunteering is incredibly rewarding, and it was a privilege to share the evening with so many inspiring volunteers.

"I would also like to pay tribute to the fantastic volunteers right across Torfaen who give their time to support their communities and make a real difference.”

The Young Volunteer of the Year Award was presented to Darla Pearce, 13, who coaches Blaenavon's youngest rugby players and supports junior netball.

Darla helps younger children build skills and confidence and is also involved in charity fundraising, including a 24 hour Relay for Life event.

Special High Sheriff of Gwent Awards were also presented to Kyle Greenhalf and Lillian Roberts in recognition of their outstanding contribution to their communities.

Aimi Morris, Chief Executive Officer at TVA said: “These awards celebrate the kindness and commitment of people across Torfaen who give their time freely for the benefit of their communities. They are also sponsored by many local partners and businesses, and without them they wouldn't be possible

“Every nominee should feel proud: someone noticed the difference they made and wanted it recognised. There is still so much we haven’t heard about, so please keep sharing those stories with TVA.”

Cllr Fiona Cross, Executive Member for Communities, said: “It was a fabulous evening celebrating the best of Torfaen’s volunteers, people who freely give their time to support their communities without seeking praise or attention.

“My thanks go to TVA, the judges and everyone who took the time to nominate. Every nominee should be incredibly proud.”
