Hundreds of children are getting a head start on secondary school before the new term begins in September.
Around 200 pupils are attending school transition camps throughout the summer holidays, at Abersychan School, West Monmouth School and Cwmbran High School
Run by Torfaen Council’s Play Service, the school transition camps are designed to help the young people build confidence, make new friends and feel ready to start Year 7.
Many are learning their way around the buildings, meeting staff, and taking part a range of team building activities, from circus skills to giant board game challenges.
Frankie, 11, from Griffithstown Primary School, who will be attending West Monmouth School, said: "It's helped me feel less stressed about starting Year 7, and I've met people who are also going to be in my form."
Isla, 11, from New Inn Primary School, said: "I've got used to the building and made new friends. I've also met the cook in the kitchen and tried the food."
The children have also been taking part in workshops and experiences, including road safety sessions, animal encounters, deaf awareness activities, rap workshops and creative arts projects.
Torfaen Youth Service is supporting the camps with activities including graffiti wall art, go-kart building projects and obstacle courses.
Oliver, 11, from Grffithstown Primary said: "The go-kart build was so cool, and I can't wait to drive it. I should be a mechanic when I grow up."
Many of the young people attending will continue to access youth clubs and activities throughout the year.
The camps form part of Torfaen's wider Food and Fun programme, which is running at 18 schools across the borough this summer. More than 3,000 children have benefited since it began on 27 July.
The summer programme comes as Torfaen Council recently launched its new Get Ready for School campaign, helping parents and carers support children through key transition years from nursery to secondary school.
Councillor Richard Clark, Executive Member for Children, Families and Communities, said: "Moving to secondary school is a major milestone for young people and can be both exciting and daunting.
"These camps help children feel comfortable in their new surroundings, make friendships and build confidence before the Autumn term commences.
"The initiative is helping children and their families feel informed, supported and prepared for the next chapter of their education."
