For many people, GCSEs are something left behind in their teenage years. For Brian Jones, aged 86, they proved that learning really can be a lifelong journey.
Originally from Garndiffaith and now living in Fairwater, Brian recently achieved a Grade C in GCSE Mathematics through Torfaen Adult Community Learning, more than 70 years after first sitting the subject.
Brian said: "I initially failed Maths in 1956 and always said I'd do it again, but life took over."
A former member of the Board at Bron Afon, Brian decided to step back from some of his commitments when he reached 80, but he wasn't ready to slow down.
"I wanted to keep my mind active," he explained. "I have friends and cousins of a similar age living in care homes and I wanted to keep my brain busy. Age is not a factor."
Known for his positive outlook on life, Brian believes the value of learning isn't found solely in the result.
"I've always been a fairly positive bloke," he said. "Whether you pass or fail doesn't really matter. The fact that you're trying is good enough."
Brian chose to study GCSE Maths as a way of keeping mentally active, but he soon discovered another unexpected benefit. At the same time, his grandsons were also studying for their GCSEs, creating a unique shared experience between generations.
He said: "Having that in common helped me connect with my grandchildren. We could share ideas, talk about coursework and support each other. Wanting to help them was a big encouragement for me."
