New 3G pitch opens at Blaenavon school

Councillors, government representatives, pupils, headteacher and contractors

A new £200,000 3G pitch has officially opened at Blaenavon Heritage Primary School, providing upgraded sports facilities for pupils to enjoy.

Torfaen Council Leader, Councillor Anthony Hunt, officially opened the pitch today, which features three marked cross-field pitches suitable for football and full-contact rugby.

The new facility also includes kickboards and upgraded LED floodlighting.

Anna Britten, Headteacher at the school, said: “We are delighted to see this new facility further enhance the sports and fitness opportunities available in Blaenavon, alongside those already provided at Blaenavon Active Living Centre.

"It's a fantastic asset for pupils, residents and local clubs, building on the town’s proud sporting culture and the wide range of activities available to children and adults.

“Importantly, local rugby and football clubs can now use facilities in Blaenavon all year round, giving more children the opportunity to take part in sport locally without transport being a barrier.”

Community bookings are managed by Blaenavon Active Living Centre and can be made via the Blaenavon Heritage VC Primary School website. (opens in new tab)

The project was funded by Torfaen Council, with work delivered by GKR, alongside subcontractor South Wales Sports Grounds.

This latest development follows the opening of seven 3G and two 2G pitches at schools across the borough, with more than £9 million invested in 3G and 2G facilities on school sites across Torfaen since 2019.

Councillor Hunt, said: “Having high-quality sports facilities on school sites gives children more opportunities to be active, develop their skills and enjoy taking part in sport.

“This latest investment at Blaenavon Heritage Primary School is another example of how we are continuing to improve facilities for pupils and create environments that support their health, wellbeing and development.”
