Join Blaenavon Towns Together action day

Businesses, voluntary groups and residents in Blaenavon are invited to help launch Blaenavon Towns Together on Saturday November 7.

Businesses, voluntary groups and residents in Blaenavon are invited to help launch Blaenavon Towns Together on Saturday November 7.

The Towns Together programme is a new way of improving and maintain town centres with council teams working alongside local communities to restore pride and bring people back to the high street.

The council's Streetscene team will kick things off with a deep clean of the town centre, followed by the community action day when staff and volunteers will make-over Broad Street and Commercial Street and nearby areas.

Garnsychan Partnership and Bethlehem Chapel, in Broad Street, will be among those taking part in the event and identifying an ongoing programme of improvements and community action.

The inaugural Blaenavon Towns Together event follows the first Pontypool Towns Together action day, in September, when around 30 volunteers joined council teams to clean up Crane Street, The Link, Commercial Street, and George Street.

Several other improvements have taken place in Pontypool town centre since then, led by the Pontypool Community Taskforce, and members of the Pontypool Voluntary Alliance and local businesses.

Cllr Joanne Gauden said: "There was a fantastic response to the first Towns Together event in Pontypool and it's led to other community activities in the town centre, such as additional replanting and businesses working together to support each other.

"It's this shared power and action between businesses, communities and the council that will help to bring people back to our high streets, attract new investment and restore pride in our town centres.

"I'm sure the community will help to make Blaenavon Towns Together action day a success and kickstart a renewed commitment to breathing new life into the town centre."

The Blaenavon Towns Together community action day will take place between 9am and 1pm on Saturday November 7. Volunteers and members of the public are asked to meet outside Bethlehem Chapel at 9am. For more information, contact amy.evans@torfaen.gov.uk

The clean-up will focus on areas voted in a Get Involved Torfaen survey.

The launch of Blaenavon Towns Together follows the unveiling of a new mural at Botanic Possessions florists, in Broad Street, last month, as part of a new The Light We Carry mural trail.

Plans are also underway for a mural on the side of the Castle Hotel, also in Broad Street.
