Half Term Hangout

Young people in Cwmbran will have a new place to meet, unwind and get involved in activities this October half term.

Half Term Hangout, delivered by Torfaen Council’s Play Service, will offer games, activities and challenges, as well as a place to relax and spend time with friends.

The provision is aimed at young people aged 8 to 14 and will be based in Gwent Square, Cwmbran Centre.

Young people can take part in organised activities or simply stop by to chat with the Play Service team, and spend time in designated chill-out areas.

The pilot follows concerns raised in recent months by local businesses and the community about antisocial behaviour in and around the town centre.

Gwent Police, South Wales Fire and Rescue Service, Torfaen Council’s Youth Service and the Community Safety team will also drop in during the week to offer support, advice and opportunities for young people to engage.

Julian Davenne, Torfaen Council’s Play Service Manager, said:

“Half Term Hangout is about taking a preventative approach by giving young people somewhere positive and welcoming to spend their time during the school holidays.

“It has developed through conversations with businesses, the community and our partners about how we can respond positively to concerns around antisocial behaviour.

“By bringing services, volunteers, businesses and young people together, we can create a shared solution. This is a pilot, but if it proves successful, we hope to build on the approach and continue the provision for as long as it is needed.”

Half Term Hangout will take place Monday to Thursday, from 10am to 3pm, with play volunteers also on hand to deliver activities.

Cllr Richard Clark, Torfaen Council’s Executive Member for Children, Families and Education, said: “This is a great example of partners listening to concerns within the community and working together to find a positive solution.

“Giving our children and young people a safe and welcoming place to meet friends and get involved in activities is good for them, local businesses and the wider community.”
