it's #AdultLearningWeek, and we're celebrating the achievements of learners who have shown that it's never too late to learn something new.
Anthony Crockett, 58, joined Torfaen Adult Community Learning in 2007 to study basic literacy after leaving school without any GCSEs and struggling with reading and writing.
Following assessments that identified dyslexia, Anthony has worked hard to improve his confidence and abilities.
While in class his tutor spotted his enthusiasm for maths and encouraged him to develop it further. Since then, Anthony has steadily progressed through his maths qualifications, and this year achieved a GCSE Maths Grade D.
Anthony is planning on continuing with his learning at ACL and is going to challenge himself this year with the Essential Skills Wales L2 Application in number course. He is also continuing with his numeracy and literacy.
Anthony said: "Maths is my superpower, but reading and writing definitely aren't, so it was a challenge. If I can do it, anyone can. The staff are very supportive, and I know I wouldn't have got through it without all of their encouragement.
"I wanted to do it to prove to myself that I could. I like to test myself and keep my brain sharp."
Torfaen Adult Community Learning has approximately 450 courses in subjects ranging from essential skills, vocational qualifications to lifestyle and leisure courses. Courses are delivered, morning, afternoon and evening across Torfaen. Most courses are face to face learning, but online self-study courses are also available.
