Staff with the council's catering team have raised more than £5,000 to help in the fight against breast cancer.

In the run up to Wear it Pink Day today, the team has been raising money by baking and selling cakes in schools, organising raffles and dressing up.

Residents have also shown their support, with one lady in Blaenavon £130.

Johanna Brown, assistant catering manager, who came up with the fundraising idea, said: "Most of our staff are women and many have either experienced breast cancer themselves or know someone who has, so we wanted to show our support.

"While it's been about raising money for breast cancer charities, it's also been an opportunity for people who have been affected by breast cancer to talk about their experiences.

"Thank you to all the staff, schools and customers who have shown their support and helped us raise a fantastic amount in just a few days."

Wear it Pink Day - held during breast cancer awareness month - is a national fundraising day organised by the charity Breast Cancer Now.

Around 59,400 people are diagnosed with breast cancer each year in the UK.
