What is Help2Own Plus?
If you are in employment but need help to buy or rent your own home, the Help2Own Plus scheme can help.
The partnership between Torfaen Council and local registered social landlords offers the following shared equity options:
Renting
Help2Own Plus rents cost less than private rents but are slightly more expensive than social housing rents.
To apply, applicants must be in employment and earning between £15,000-£40,000, either individually or as a combined income. You will need to pay a month’s rent up front and may need a deposit.
Assisted Home Ownership - New Build Properties
You will be required to raise a mortgage for 70% of the value of the property with no rent payable.
Shared Ownership - New Build Properties
Also known as part buy/part rent. This option will typically offer a 50% mortgage 50% rent. Owners can purchase the remaining share of their home when they are able to do so.
Assisted Home Ownership - DIY
The Welsh Government provides funding to help some people buy properties. You will need a 70% mortgage.
Help2Own Plus eligibility
You must be:
- Over 18 years old
- Able to obtain a mortgage (Home ownership schemes)
- Unable to afford the current market rates (Home ownership schemes)
You will need some savings for the costs involved in purchasing a property, e.g. solicitor fees, removals etc. plus up to £1000 to cover administration charges.

When the application has been accepted, a letter will be sent to you containing your unique registration number.
When properties become available the nominated Registered Social Landlord (RSL) will contact you to advise on availability of property/funding, depending on your preference and affordability level.
