Councillors expenses and allowances

All Councillors are entitled to claim a basic allowance (currently set at £19,771) to reflect the work they do as local representatives.

Some posts for example the Leader, Deputy Leader, Cabinet Members, Scrutiny and other Committee Chairs such as Planning and Licensing, have special responsibilities over and above other Councillors. These Councillors can claim special responsibility allowances. A care allowance is also available for those with dependents.

Councillors can claim expenses to cover their costs when they are travelling away for council business, for example committee meetings.

Torfaen Council publishes expenses – or Schedule of Member Remuneration – annually.

Councillors’ salaries and allowances are decided by The Boundary Commission for Wales.
