A sod cutting event has been held to mark the start of work on a new 3G pitch and improved multi-games areas in Cwmbran.
The £1.2m development at Cwmbran High will include a FIFA and World Rugby-certified 3G pitch surface and the refurbishment of an existing redgra area for hockey.
On Thursday, Council Leader Anthony Hunt, Cllr Rosemary Seaborne and Cllr Jayne Watkins joined Cwmbran High headteacher Matthew Sims, Chair of Governors John Healy and pupils to mark the start of work.
Cllr Hunt said: "I'm pleased we're able to mark this occasion and I'd like to thank staff, governors and pupils for their input.
"I remember coming to the school and asking what pupils they'd like to see here and while we can't always deliver everything, it's important we listen to pupils and try our best to give them the facilities they need."
Mr Sims added: “The new 3G pitch will not only enhance sporting opportunities for our pupils but also strengthen our ties with the local community. It’s a proud moment for the school and a sign of our continued growth and ambition.
"It's also is an exciting development that marks a significant milestone for Cwmbran High as we approach our 10th anniversary in October."
Work on a new 3G pitch and hockey area - which will include floodlights, fencing, new trees and a wildflower meadow - is expected to be completed by the end of March 2026.
The pitches will be available for the school and local clubs to hire.
The project has been funded by the UK Government Shared Prosperity Fund.
It follows the completion of other 3G pitches at Ysgol Gymraeg Gwynllyw, which opened last year, and Abersychan and Llantarnam Primary schools, which were completed earlier this year.
Last month, the council approved the allocation of up to £200,000 for a new all-weather pitch at Blaenavon Heritage Primary School. Work is expected to start this autumn.
