Play Service New Year provision

More than 130 children took part in a series of play and activity camps at Cwmbran Stadium last week, organised by Torfaen Play Service.

The play service has run clubs during the Christmas school holidays over the past few years, giving children aged between eight and 12 the chance to enjoy a variety of sporting activities, team games and time with friends.

A number of specialist play and respite sessions were also held at different venues for 56 children who require one-to-one assistance.

Torfaen Play Service is now looking for more volunteers to help with their upcoming summer play programme.

As well as acquiring work based skills and valuable experience working with children and young people, volunteers will also complete training and be eligible to claim £15 daily travel and food expenses.

If you are interested in becoming a play volunteer, you can complete the online application form here or for queries, contact the Play team on 01495 742322 or email andrea.sysum@torfaen.gov.uk

Councillor Richard Clark, Torfaen Council Executive Member for Children, Families and Education, said: “It’s wonderful to hear that these play sessions were offered during the first week of the new year, supporting many families across the borough.

“It’s all made possible by the dedicated staff and volunteers at Torfaen Play Service, who work hard to provide quality play provision for children and young people all year round.

“The high attendance has emphasised the importance of running staffed provision during this time. Not only do they give children a safe place to play with their peers, but it also gives parents and carers the opportunity for a break themselves.”
