School comes back firing to take the win

A team of pupils from Ysgol Gymraeg Gwynllyw has put themselves in pole position in an F1 competition for schools.

The Year 11 pupils competed in the development class in the South Wales regional heat and won the best pit display category, having left empty handed last time.

Team ‘Speed Force Racing’ competed in the development class at the F1 in Schools South Wales Regional Competition on 9th February at St. Fagan’s Museum.

The F1 STEM competition has been running in schools since 1999. The project aims to promote science, technology, engineering, and maths into education in a creative way.

The Year 11 pupils of Ysgol Gymraeg Gwynllyw, in Pontypool, worked hard to design their own race car and create a design, engineering, and enterprise portfolios.

Luke Mitchell, 15, said: “It was an amazing feeling to win best pit display, after leaving empty handed last year, we were determined to up our game this year.”

“A huge thanks to our sponsors ACT for providing us with our display boards and to our other sponsors, Phil Anslow Coaches and Flexible Options for their financial support, can’t wait for next year’s competition!”

Ieuan Griffin, 16, added: “It was a thrilling experience, the competition has been a fantastic in terms of developing confidence, presentation and public speaking skills, and developing links with other schools who were taking part.”

Catrin Rees, Skills Challenge Teacher, said: “The F1 in Schools is a fantastic project that we have been working on over the last two years, it’s fantastic to see how the cars and portfolios had evolved.”

“It was great to see them mingling with other contestants, discussing their projects, and sharing ideas, roll on next year!”
