Our Lady's Not In Miss Out

Staff at a primary school in Cwmbran have been praised for putting pupils' well-being at the heart of the school.

In a report published this week, Estyn inspectors said the support Our Lady of the Angels RC Primary School gives to pupils' emotional needs was a particular strength, adding that students felt listened to and well-supported.

The report said: "Pupils' well-being is at the heart of Our Lady of the Angels School. Many pupils enjoy school and feel happy and safe during their time there.

"The school's provision for supporting pupils with emotional and well-being needs is a particular strength."

The inspectors also praised the school for developing interesting learning experiences based on the new Curriculum for Wales, including outdoor learning, awareness of local heritage and educational trips.

The report said: "Teachers are beginning to consider how they plan for interesting and authentic learning experiences to reflect the principles of the Curriculum for Wales. They plan lessons that build on pupils' existing knowledge and understanding.

"The school is beginning to create a bespoke curriculum to reflect their local area, values and beliefs."

Councillor Richard Clark, Executive Member for Education, said: "The caring and nurturing nature of Our Lady of the Angels school comes through in every part of this Estyn report.

"The inspectors rightly attribute the pupils' good attendance, behaviour and willingness to learn to the fact they feel happy and supported by staff."

The report recommended the school work to improve planning and provision to support progressive development of pupils' skills; sharpen self-evaluation processes and consistently provide opportunities for pupils to develop independent learning skills.
