Torfaen Adult Community Learning has just launched their new 2023/24 brochure, with more than 100 courses to choose from.

Both accredited and non-accredited courses are available, ranging from GCSE English and Maths to cookery courses, digital skills and foreign language classes.

Courses have been designed to cater for a wide range of interests and goals, from those looking to start a new hobby to individuals wanting to take the next steps in their career.

The brochure will be delivered to all properties in Torfaen during the first week of August or you can view it online here

Ian Evans, 72, from Henllys, is the founder of Cwmbran based Sporting Memories Group – which supports people aged 50-plus to improve their mental and physical wellbeing, including those living with dementia, depression or facing isolation and loneliness.

Ian and other members of the group recently completed a free Restart a Heart and Level 2 First Aid course at Croesyceiliog Community Education Centre.

Ian said: “I set up a Sporting Memories group at Cwmbran RFC post pandemic, with the aim of bringing ex sports men and women together, particularly those who are socially isolated, to reminisce about past times.

“Given the demographic of the group and the range of medical conditions, it made perfect sense that our volunteers be in a position to provide a degree of immediate emergency first aid if that need arose.

“We found that both courses were hugely beneficial, not only demonstrating and allowing us to practice correct responses to a wide variety of medical emergencies, but also increasing our confidence in dealing with situations. I would encourage more groups in Torfaen to access these free courses as it has been hugely beneficial”.

Additionally, Yasmin Westmeckett,18, from Oakfield, has completed a GCSE Maths qualification this year and is now looking to sign up for a Level 2 Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools qualification, ahead of September.

Yasmin said: “I left school at 16 and decided to return to adult learning rather than college as it was flexible, one day a week and in the evenings.

“Since signing up, I have been able to do GCSE’s Maths which has put me on the right pathway to become a Teaching Assistant.”

If you, or someone you know, are thinking about signing up for a course this Autumn, get in touch with Torfaen Adult Community Learning by calling 01633 647647 or emailing power.station@torfaen.gov.uk
