A secondary school has been praised for creating a caring and inclusive environment that supports pupils' education and wellbeing.

A report by the school inspectorate Estyn said St Alban's RC High School's values of respect, responsibility and resilience provided pupils with the best possible education.

The report, published this week, also highlighted the strong working relationships staff have with pupils, as well as the teachers' high expectations, which motivate students to make good progress.

The inspectors visited the school in Pontypool in May this year and said the majority of pupils enjoyed being at school and engaged well with their learning.

The report said the school offered a balanced curriculum which considers the needs and interests of pupils, as well as an excellent range of enrichment and extra-curricular activities.

It also recognised the robust support systems the school has in place to support those pupils unwilling or unable to attend school regularly. These include regular contact with pupils with low attendance and Emotional Based School Avoidance interventions.

In praising the school's leadership team, the report said: "The headteacher, supported by a strong leadership team, shares a clear vision of high ambition and success for all.

"Nearly all staff promote this vision and consistently reinforce the school’s values. This contributes strongly to an inclusive Catholic ethos that permeates school life.

"As a result, pupils enjoy school and are very proud to be part of the St Alban’s community."

The report recommended the school increase the range of opportunities for pupils to practise Welsh outside of lessons and that the condition of building is improved.

Headeacher Stephen Lord said: "We are extremely proud and delighted for all members of our school community and Governing Body with the outcome of our recent Estyn inspection report.

"Our commitment to all pupils and families is ongoing as we continue to work closely with the Archdiocese, Welsh Government and Local Authority to improve the quality of the buildings.

We have already implemented strategies to further develop our pupils’ confidence in using the Welsh language across the curriculum."

Councillor Richard Clark, Executive Member for Children, Families and Education, said: "This report clearly demonstrates the effectiveness of strong, positive leadership within a school.

"It is great to hear so many pupils at St Alban's are inspired and motivated by their passionate teachers and that the support is in place for those students who may struggle to engage."
