It wasn't just school pupils celebrating GCSE success this week - more than 50 adult learners also collected their results.

This year, 53 learners with Torfaen Council's Adult Community Learning took GCSE exams - 100 per cent achieved grades A to C in English and 68 per cent achieved A to C in maths.

All GCSE maths learners were funded through the UK Government's new Multiply programme, which meant they could access it for free.

Megan Evans, from New Inn, got an A in English and B in maths.

She said: “It’s my eighth time trying and I’ve finally got the grades I want. I’m finally going onto study my PGCE at the University of South Wales and become a primary school teacher.

"I would say to other learners - when you think you have revised, revise some more.”

Louise Jelley, from Sebastopol, said: “I joined GCSE maths to boost my own confidence. I think it’s a qualification everyone wants to get deep down. After lots of hard work, I achieved a B and I am absolutely over the moon.”

Lee Stewart, from Llanyravon, said: “I achieved a B, I can’t believe it! If you’re thinking about doing it, grab it with both hands, the skills I’ve learned have helped me so much.”

Executive Member for Economy, Skills and Regeneration, Councillor Joanne Gauden said: “This year’s results are testament to the hard work and dedication of our adult learners and our tutors in the Adult Community Learning Service. Offering residents the chance to improve their skills and qualifications is one of the priorities in our County Plan.

"We’re so proud of our learners celebrating their amazing achievements today. Not only is it proof of their commitment to succeed, but it also reflects the high-quality teaching and learning that takes place in within the ACL service.”

This year, the GCSE maths learners were funded through the UK Government's new Multiply programme, which meant they could access it for free.
