From September, more than 4,000 junior school pupils in Torfaen will be able to receive a Universal Primary Free School Meal.

It’s part of the Welsh Government’s Universal Free School Meals offer which requires primary schools across Wales to provide a free meal to all year groups by September 2024.

Universal Free School Meals were first made available last September to younger learners in reception and years 1 and 2 in Torfaen.

Families that have traditionally qualified for means tested free school meals can still access additional support, such as School Essentials grant, but must apply to the council.

Councillor Richard Clark, Executive Member for Children, Families and Education, said: “Extensive research confirms that a nutritious meal significantly enhances a child's aptitude for learning. While breakfast clubs have already made a positive impact, this new scheme heralds a transformative leap forward.

“For families who may not have previously qualified for means-tested free school meals and have faced challenges posed by rising food prices, this initiative offers solace by ensuring their children receive a nourishing lunch, equipping them to actively engage in lessons."
