A grant aimed at funding projects that brings communities together, has opened.

The Community Cohesion Grant for up to £2000 is open to any community group, school or third sector organisation across Torfaen, Blaenau Gwent and Caerphilly.

The grant is for projects which look to challenge discrimination, promote inclusion and provide opportunities for people who might not ordinarily come together to meet and celebrate where they live.

Last year, more than 90 children from Blaenavon Junior Rugby Club benefited from taking part in Tongan community taster day, which promoted inclusion and differences to prevent prejudices in children from a young age.

The children tested their culinary skills by cooking traditional Tongan cuisine, played rugby, and discussed rugby cultures on and off the pitch.

The Thornhill Playgroup secured a grant which enabled children to visit and entertain elderly residents in local care homes through a variety of intergenerational games and musical performances.

The closing date for applications is Friday 22 September 2023 and projects must be delivered by Wednesday 31st January 2024.
