Staying in School

There are five 11-18 secondary schools in Torfaen including the Welsh language school, Ysgol Gyfun Gwynllyw and the Catholic Voluntary aided school, St Alban's. These schools offer a range of A levels, AS levels, Key skills and vocational GNVQ courses. There are also other courses available such as GCSE, that will help you increase your range of qualifications.

In school you will have access to quality advice, your teachers will provide guidance and support to help you manage your studies and plan for the future. They can explain how to apply for higher education, further education or employment and training. Teachers and tutors will be able to provide help on a daily basis.

Careers advisers are also attached to schools. They can provide you with specialist advice and will produce an individual action plan to keep in your National Record of Achievement.

Schools will also offer a range of activities that will help with your personal and social development. This may include such things as:

  • Play and productions
  • Charity and voluntary work
  • Helping the community
  • Sporting activity
  • Lunch time or after school clubs
  • Helping and supporting younger students
  • Duke of Edinburgh's Award
  • Young Enterprise Schemes
  • Debating and Citizenship events

Each school will have a prospectus that offers greater detail about its services. Open Evenings are usually held in the spring term, the dates being available from the school. These will provide a chance to meet your subject teachers, discuss your needs and visit the school.
