School Travel Plans

Each school should have its own School Travel Plan (STP). The plan should set out a strategy for reducing car use and to improve the safety of children on the journey to their school.

Many children live close enough to school to walk but often do not. Many older children would like to cycle but are possibly concerned about safety. Other pupils would like to travel by bus, but there may not be a service available at the right time or they may feel intimidated by bullying or other anti-social behaviour.

Torfaen Council is committed to bringing about a change in home to school travel patterns to cut congestion and pollution, but also to allow more pupils to take regular exercise.

The aim is to reduce car use on the school run by creating conditions which will allow far more children to travel safely to school on foot, by bicycle or on the bus.

STPs are not just about travel but also about reducing road casualties especially amongst children, improving health, broadening education and combating social exclusion. They contribute towards making the local community greener and improving quality of life.

ECO schools will recognise that the Transport theme in their ECO programme can overlap very well with an STP.
