Road Safety Advice for Other Road Users

Horses

Please pass horses wide and slow.

Horses are large powerful animals but they can easily panic and bolt if startled. By following some basic advice, drivers and riders can help avoid accidents involving horses on the road. Visit the THINK website for further advice.

Mobility scooters

Mobility scooters are becoming more popular. If you are thinking of buying or using a mobility scooter please make sure beforehand that you understand and are familiar with requirements of owning or operating one. A mobility scooter user is responsible for their own and other people’s safety.

Torfaen Council recommend all users read the booklet “A Highway Code for Mobility Scooter Users”.

School crossing patrol

Our patrols (SCPs) help children and adults to cross roads to and from school more safely during term time. By law SCPs have the power to stop traffic to help anyone cross the road. Most of our SCPs are on busy stretches of road where children cross to reach their school. Even where a SCP is provided, parents remain responsible for ensuring their children's safety.

Failing to stop for an SCP when requested, is an offence and the Council will report any ‘drive-through’ offences at SCP locations to the Police. If prosecuted and convicted for failing to stop for an SCP, drivers may receive in a fine, penalty points on the drivers licence or possibly be disqualified from driving.
