If you fancy volunteering but don’t know where to start, the Connect Torfaen has more than 60 volunteer vacancies.

Connect Torfaen is a new social networking platform which promotes local community activities and events and connects volunteers with organisations who need support.

This can include helping out on a one-off or ad hoc basis to becoming a regular volunteer.

One such group using the Connect site to attract new volunteers is Blaen Bran Community Woodland group. They work with a regular small group of volunteers to help manage the 100-acre woodland between Cwmbran and Pontypool.

Sometimes the work requires volunteers to learn new skills or undergo specific training, which can lead to qualifications and work experience.

Recently, three volunteers undertook digger training as part of a project to improve drainage in some areas, build new steps and clear footpaths, thanks to £7,000 of funding from Transport for Wales.

David Williams, who is a member at Blaen Bran Woodland, said “Volunteers are vital for small community groups like ours. Connect Torfaen is a fantastic resource for community members who are seeking out volunteering opportunities on their doorstep. We regularly advertise project activities and opportunities on the site, so watch this space."

Volunteers who offer their services through the Connect Torfaen website get digital badges, which showcase their specific skills, qualifications and rewards.

This will help other members on the site seek out potential volunteers based on their interests and digital badge status.

Blaen Bran Community group also host open access volunteering sessions every Tuesday from 9am – where people can give as much or as little time as they wish.
