Over 1000 primary school children have been learning about road safety, dangers of grass fires, and how to stay safe round water.
The Crucial Crew lessons are aimed at Year 6 pupils, aged between 10 and 11, who are preparing to move to secondary school in September.
Torfaen Council’s Road Safety Officer delivered sessions about the importance of wearing seatbelts, alongside presentations from the RNLI, South Wales Fire and rescue, Network Rail, the Food Standards Agency, Western Power and the army.
Kate Kerr, Road Safety Officer for Torfaen Council, said: “It was lovely to be back delivering face to face road safety sessions, but worryingly around 50 per cent of young children spoken to admitted to not always using their seatbelt for every journey.
“So together we thought about various excuses as to why people don’t always wear them, and discussed why it is vital to wear our seatbelt for every journey we take.
“The children looked at how important it is to wear seatbelts properly, and why everyone we are travelling with needs to wear them to avoid injury to themselves or others travelling with them.
“The children were very positive about the information given to them with the majority convinced to make sure they and their fellow passengers always belt up for every trip.”
Crucial Crew is a vital yearly event and is very popular with schools and partners. It gives organisations the opportunity to reach a huge number of children over a few weeks to deliver incredibly important messages. Crucial Crew sessions are all designed to give children vital information for their safety and responsibilities as they move on to comprehensive school and become young adults.
