Play service jobs

If you fancy getting paid to help children play, then Torfaen Council’s multi-award winning play service is recruiting.

Torfaen Play Service has many jobs available, including play workers and wellbeing workers, to help deliver a wide range of play opportunities this summer.

The playscheme provisions will run from Monday 1 August until Thursday 25 August. Applicants aged at least 18 years and over by 1 August 2022.

The deadline to apply for vacancies is Friday 1 April and must be done online via the Torfaen website.

The service is also on the lookout for volunteers age 16+ to help deliver:

  • Active Camps within primary schools
  • Open Access Playschemes delivered from community buildings
  • Play and Activity Sessions
  • Play and Respite Sessions for children and young people with disabilities and complex behaviours
  • Play in the Park Sessions

Maia Elsworthy, 16, from Coed Eva, signed up as a Play Volunteer with the service last summer after hearing about it from her friends who had done it previously.

As a keen ballet dancer, Maia brings dance into her volunteering role and does sessions with the children

Maia is currently studying A-level in Biology, Chemistry and Psychology at Torfaen Learning Zone and finds time to take on her volunteering role in between her studies.

She said: “I absolutely love volunteering with the Play Service! ! I have made lots of new friends and love working with all of the children. I am now a regular volunteer doing four different provisions a week and can’t wait for the summer again.”

Historically, around 150 young people take part in the scheme each summer, where they get the chance to learn new life skills, gain experience to enhance their CV, make new friends and have a great summer.

Luc Payne, 19, from Greenmeadow, is studying a degree in Sports Science and believes that the experience he gained during his time volunteering with Torfaen Play helped him get onto the course.

He said: “Without volunteering with the play service I don’t think I would be where I am today. It built my confidence with working with children, and it made me realise this is what I want as a career. It is a fantastic opportunity, and I would push anyone to do it.”

Neve Jenkins, 17, from Llantarnam, started volunteering with Torfaen Play two years ago and is now in the process of applying for university, where he hopes to study Chemistry.

She said: “It has given me the opportunity to do good things in the community and have a greater understanding of play and the benefits it has for all children. I gained in confidence and made new friendships.”

The deadline for volunteer applications is Saturday 30 April 2022.

Julian Davenne, Torfaen Play Service Manager, said: “This is a valuable and rewarding experience for anyone wishing to work with children, young people and the wider community.

“We have been offering this scheme for over 20 years now and it gets bigger and bigger each year. Young people are fantastic and without them we could not offer as much as we do.”
