Folly Tower and Shell Grotto to reopen

The Folly Tower and Shell Grotto visitor attractions are set to re-open following a £45,000 refurbishment project.

Torfaen Council has worked closely with the Friends of Pontypool Park, to plan and implement refurbishment works, following concerns from the community about the condition of both iconic buildings.

With the help of the Council’s Covid Recovery Fund, the Shell Grotto has had roof tiles repaired, internal walls have been rebuilt, and a refresh of the decorative works to doors and railings has taken place.

Folly Tower has had steelwork repairs, repairs to timberwork and glass, internal and external decoration has been refurbished, and new external flagstone steps have been erected.

Both attractions will next be open to members of the public on Bank Holiday Monday, 29 August, thanks to the Friends of Pontypool Park.

Councillor Mandy Owen, Executive Member for the Environment, said: “I am so pleased these iconic buildings have been safeguarded for our communities and visitors to enjoy. It’s a great example of the Council working closely with community groups to deliver projects that benefit current and future generations.”

A representative of the Friends of Pontypool group, said: “We can’t wait to show the grotto and folly to all visitors. It’s been a very long time waiting to showcase our most precious buildings in such a wonderful park.”

Future opening dates for Folly Tower and the Shell Grotto can be found via the Pontypool Park Friends Facebook page where the public can request further information.
