HWRC car bookings to end

Posted on: Thursday 6 January 2022

Car drivers will no longer need to book to visit the Household Waste Recycling Centre from next week.

The booking system will still be in place over the weekend, but bookings must be made by midday on Friday.

The system was introduced when the site in New Inn, Pontypool, reopened in May 2020, following the first lockdown.

At the end of last year, we asked residents if they would like to keep the system, or have it removed, and 60 per cent opted to get rid of it.

From Monday, January 10, residents will be able to turn up at the site, although van and trailer drivers will still need to book.

There will continue to be health and safety measures in place, in light of the ongoing pandemic - visitors will be expected to maintain social distancing and staff will not be able to assist in unloading vehicles.

There will also be a maximum limit of 16 vehicles on the site at any one time.

Councillor Mandy Owen, Executive Member for the Environment, said: "As we said, the future of the booking system was in the hands of the residents, and the results have spoken.

"We are continuing to monitor Covid and the new strain and if we are instructed by the Welsh Government to change our operations, we will have to.

"Our teams have worked hard to ensure the booking system comes to an end from Monday. But there will be a limit on the number of cars allowed onto the site in order to continue to keep staff and visitors safe, so that may result in queues outside the site at busy times, like weekends."

The HWRC winter opening times are 10am - 4pm, seven days a week, with the last vehicles allowed onto the site at 3.45pm.

The summer opening times come into effect after the clocks go back in March.

Visitors are asked to sort their waste and recycling before going to the site to help reduce the amount of time they need to spend there.

Anyone with black bag waste will be asked to open up the bags to show it does not contain anything that could be recycled.

Good quality items can be donated to the Steelhouse Reuse Shop close to the HWRC.
