Tackling Torfaen's carbon emissions

Posted on: Monday 25 October 2021

Tackling climate change in Torfaen is a key priority, and today Torfaen Council launches its first major consultation on how that can be done.

We've produced a Draft Climate And Nature Emergency Action Plan, which sets out ways in which the council, communities and individuals can cut carbon and nurture nature to help offset emissions.

We would like to know what you think about the draft plan, and find out what suggestions you have to tackle Torfaen's carbon emissions.

Councillor Mandy Owen, Executive Member for environment, said: "Torfaen Council declared a climate emergency in 2019 and this year we recognised the threat to biodiversity.

"The good news is emissions in Torfaen are coming down, but there's a long way to go. This draft action plan sets out how we can accelerate our progress and we want residents to be part of the conversation."

Net carbon zero means balancing the amount of emissions produced with the amount removed from the atmosphere. For example, Torfaen Council has introduced electric vehicles and switched to LED lighting, and reduced grass-cutting on verges to encourage biodiversity, which helps to remove carbon from the atmosphere.

Rachel Jowitt, Torfaen Council's chief officer for Neighbourhoods, Planning and Public Protection, said: "The draft action plan sets out some key steps towards reducing emissions and offsetting carbon.

"But we cannot do it alone. We would love to hear what you think of the plan, tell us about the challenges you may face to making changes, and any other suggestions you have."

The consultation comes as leaders from around the world prepare for the start of COP26 - the UN Climate Change Conference - in Glasgow next week.

Torfaen Council will be supporting COP26 by sharing the key messages from the conference, and highlighting how Torfaen is already helping to tackle climate change.

Throughout the two-week conference we will bring you:

* Details of Torfaen's first-ever climate ambassadors network;

* A series of Cut The Carbon and Nurture Nature Torfaen blogs;

* Hints and tips for reducing emissions and offsetting carbon.

To get involved in the conversation, take part in the consultation here.
