Bootcamps help women in Torfaen stay fit and active

Karen Atwell has swapped lie ins on a Saturday morning for Torfaen Sports Development’s new Ifyougoigo boot camp sessions.  

She is one of around 20 women who have signed up for the exercise classes, which were set up for those inspired by the popular female #IfyougoIgo fitness programme.

Having just celebrated her 60th Birthday, Karen put herself forward for the boot camps so that she could feel more body confident and get fitter.

Karen said, “I'm not very good at doing any form of exercising on my own, it's too easy for me to find an excuse not to do it.

The first session that I went to was terrifying as I didn't know what to expect but I soon found out that boot camp is fab. The other women that attend are great, we all motivate each other to keep going.”

Initially Karen thought that her age may be a barrier, but was soon reassured that age is just a number.

She added, “Hopefully by doing some form of regular exercise it will help to keep any aches and pains at bay so that I can enjoy my life.

The boot camp sessions take place every Saturday morning, 9am until 10am, at Pontypool Active Living Centre  

Women taking part can expect to pair up to complete a timed circuit using different pieces of equipment, including battle ropes, a sled, sand bags, slam balls, medicine balls, kettlebells and barbells.

To keep it fresh, different exercises with the different pieces of equipment take place each week.

Each session has a limit of 30 women, so booking is required.

Megan Parker, Torfaen Sports Development Officer, “The boot camp aims to instruct women about how to use different pieces of equipment safely and teaches them the different exercises that they can do. Most importantly It allows women in similar positions to come together and exercise together, without feeling judged.

Since the boot camp started the women have made close friendships and have supported each other. All the women have made great progress over the past few weeks increasing their fitness levels in the process.”

Women who regularly attend and progress will be offered a place at future #ifyougoigo 10 week programmes.
