Gwent Police are looking to establish a Youth Community Cohesion Group for 16-25 year olds.

The purpose of the group will be to act as a critical friend and independent scrutiny voice for the work Gwent Police undertake within communities across Gwent.

The group will look at summary data, examine trends and talk about issues that may affect them. This could be issues such as stop and search, use of force, drugs, ASB and hate crime.

Gwent Police are also seeking young people who perhaps do not currently have positive views of policing, as their voice is equally as important as those who do.

Before joining, young people under the age of 18 years will require parental approval and a basic vetting check will be carried out.

In addition, Gwent Police are looking for young people to join a full Independent Advisory Group which examines individual data and body cam footage.

The IAG performs full scrutiny of the Force, offers guidance and performs a critical friend role on a number of community-based policing issues.

Applicants must be over 18 and there will be a need for a higher level vetting check to take place.

Both the Youth Community Cohesion Group and IAG group will meet via Microsoft Teams, with a hope to resume face to face meetings when Covid 19 restrictions allow.

Executive Member for Corporate Governance and Performance, Cllr David Yeowell, said, “This is a wonderful opportunity for young people in Torfaen to gain a better understanding of the types of policing that takes place in Torfaen and across the region.

It will also give them the chance to have their say to work towards resolving issues and bring about better community cohesion within their communities.”

Young people looking to register their interest for either group should email Laura Price at Laura.Price@gwent.pnn.police.uk
