The Big Welsh Rhyme Time 8 -14 February

Posted on: Thursday 4 February 2021

The Big Welsh Rhyme Time is a national celebration of sharing rhymes and songs in the early years. It is organised by BookTrust Cymru as part of our Welsh Government funded programmes.

The Big Welsh Rhyme Time aims to promote and encourage fun and enjoyable rhyme sharing activity for children in Wales aged 0-6, in Welsh and English.

Sharing rhymes and songs is a vital early years activity and can help children:

  • develop speaking, listening and oracy skills, including developing their attention
  • develop language and communication skills, including giving them a head start when they begin to learn to read
  • build confidence to speak, sing and join in
  • have fun!

In 2020, over 22,000 children across Wales took part in the Big Welsh Rhyme Time. They shared rhymes and songs and took part in lots of fun events and activities.

Next year, we want to make the Big Welsh Rhyme Time even better by inviting children in Foundation Phase to take part in the rhyming fun, too!

The next Big Welsh Rhyme Time will take place from 8 – 14 February 2021.

Activities will include:

  • Distribution of up to 20,000 Big Welsh Rhyme Time stickers and certificates to settings, schools and other partners working with children and families in the early years
  • Big Welsh Rhyme Time themed activities and sessions in participating settings and schools
  • A social media campaign promoting the Big Welsh Rhyme Time and encouraging families to share rhymes and songs
  • PR activities to promote the Big Welsh Rhyme Time and encourage schools, settings and families to get involved
