Christmas waste and recycling collections

Posted on: Friday 17 December 2021

There will be no changes to waste and recycling collections over the festive period as crews now work the bank holidays.

Councillor Mandy Owen, Executive member for the Environment, said: “Once again our crews will be working the bank holidays to collect waste and recycling, so collections will take place on residents’ usual day.

“To make sure everyone is aware of this, we are asking residents to share the information with family and friends so no one misses out on a collection.

“This year has continued to be tough for crews due to Covid-19, and aging vehicles. I would like to once again thank residents for their patience with waste and recycling crews, and I would like to thank our crews for continuing to work hard in challenging conditions.”

The revised collection dates are as follows:

Revised waste collection dates
Normal day of collectionCollection day
Friday 24 December Friday 24 December
Monday 27 December Monday 27 December
Tuesday 28 December Tuesday 28 December
Wednesday 29 December Wednesday 29 December
Thursday 30 December Thursday 30 December
Friday 31 December Friday 31 December

Reminder – all waste and recycling needs to be placed out before 6am on their collection day.

Separating your waste
To help our collection crews it would be helpful if residents separate out their recycling as much as possible. This not only speeds up collections because crews don’t have to manually sort items by hand, but it reduces the amount of waste crews have to handle which would be very much appreciated during the current climate.

Squashing your recycling can free up space in your bins and boxes, so squash as much as you can.

Extra waste
We appreciate that there will be extra waste produced over the festive period, even after residents have recycled as much as they can. So, to help manage this we will collect up to two extra black bags of rubbish per household on the first purple lidded bin waste collection only after Christmas. Please make sure the bags are placed next to the purple-lidded bin.

We will be extremely busy collecting your waste and recycling during the Christmas and New Year period so we would like to advise residents to leave their bins, boxes and bags out until they have been emptied.

We will only return to empty bins/boxes/bags if we have missed.

Wrapping paper
Due to companies currently not accepting wrapping paper for recycling, please put it in the purple-lidded bin.

Christmas tree recycling
If you have a real Christmas tree, once it’s come to the end of its life it can be taken to the Household Waste Recycling Centre to be shredded and used as compost.

Christmas Cards
Please put Christmas cards in your blue cardboard bag for recycling.
