More than 200 children and young people have been enjoying a summer of fun thanks to Torfaen Council's Play Service.

As part of a Welsh Government initiative, pop up 'Play in the Park' sessions have taken place throughout August in parks and open spaces across the borough.

Children had the chance to take part in arts and crafts, den building, group games, sports and nature-based activities.

One of the most popular summer activities proved to be the Gnome around Torfaen, where 700 gnomes were handed out for children to paint and display in their gardens.

To celebrate the importance of play, this years National Play Day saw over 900 families collect free play packs containing a range of goodies, including frisbees, skipping ropes, yoyos and more.

Julian Davenne, Play Service Manager for Torfaen said, ‘This year we didn’t expect the park sessions to go as well as they did. We would be really keen to offer these on top of everything else next summer.

Our playworkers and play volunteers did, as they always do, a tremendous job to ensure children had a fun and safe environment to enjoy their summer of fun.

Of course, these events wouldn’t have been possible without working in partnership with our Community Councils across the borough.’
