Today we are flying the Red Ensign; the UK Merchant Navy's official flag outside the Civic Centre in Pontypool.

Merchant Navy Day is celebrated in order to pay tribute to all the brave men and women who kept our 'island nation' afloat during both World Wars and to recognise the many thousands of British seafarers that still work on the world oceans, ensuring that more than 90% of UK imports take place.

Last year the Red Ensign was flown at more than one thousand locations across the UK to remember the sacrifices, salute the courage and support the future of the Merchant Navy.
