A message from Councillor Anthony Hunt, Leader of Torfaen Council

Posted on: Monday 9 November 2020

Thank you to all Torfaen residents for all your efforts during the national Firebreak and the local restrictions before that.

The evidence shows those efforts are having an impact. Our local rates reduced from 270 cases per 100,000 to just over 150 in the past week (both figures a rolling 7 day average). Let’s keep up our efforts and maintain our vigilance to keep driving these figures down.  We must not drop our guard and remember that the virus hasn’t gone away - local restrictions were introduced when we were around 50 cases per 100,000.

Here is a useful Q&A from the Welsh Government on the post-firebreak regulations.

In order to keep each other safe and maintain the progress we’re making on getting Covid-19 rates down, we have to take personal responsibility.

Please don’t think of this as a game to see how far we can push the rules. It’s best to ask if you really need to do something, rather than whether you can get away with it - think ‘should I?’ rather than ‘can I?’ The more contact you have with others, the more you risk contracting or spreading the virus.

I know it’s boring, but please keep social distancing, hand-washing, wearing a face covering and remember to self-isolate where you or anyone in your household has symptoms.

In the meantime, we’ll continue to work hard to support local people and businesses as much as we can through these hard times. Together we can get through this.

Regards

Anthony
