With Foster Care Fortnight 2019 just around the corner, Torfaen Fostering teams are looking to recruit new mainstream foster carers that would love to make a positive difference in children’s lives.
Taking place from 13 May until 26 May, Foster Care Fortnight™ is the UK’s biggest foster care awareness raising campaign.
Thousands of new foster families are needed every year to care for children, with the greatest need being for foster carers for older children, sibling groups, disabled children and unaccompanied asylum seeking children.
Currently there are 111 mainstream foster carers in Torfaen and our fostering teams are looking to significantly increase this number in 2019.
Looked after children in Torfaen are placed in various fostering arrangements which can include; respite care, MIST (Mutli-disciplinary Intervention Service) care and mainstream. In addition to this, parent and child foster placements are becoming increasingly more common due an increase in court requests.
Torfaen council are also looking for carers who can offer placements on a lodgings basis for young people who are in employment, college or university as a stepping stone towards independence, and foster carers that can foster young sibling groups.
MIST (Multi-disciplinary Intervention Service Torfaen) are also looking for more therapeutic foster carers who could support young people with complex needs.
If you think fostering may be for you and your family, the Torfaen Fostering team has organised a meet and greet event that will take place on Tuesday 14 May at Pontypool Civic Centre (Committee Room 2), 4pm – 6pm. (no appointment required)
During the session you will be able to have an in-depth conversation with members of the fostering team and existing foster carers to learn more about the fostering process and the range of benefits available.
Executive Member for Children and Young People, Cllr Mandy Owen said, 'With current demand for foster carers increasing year on year, we would like to encourage those that are already thinking about fostering to come forward and meet with our family placement team for an informal chat. There are many roles within fostering and being a foster carer is more than just a job, it’s a commitment but it provides such huge rewards.
As a council, we need to ensure that all children in Torfaen have a safe home to grow up in.’
