Torfaen Adult Community Learning first to deliver new infection prevention and control course for special procedure practitioners

We are delighted to announce that Torfaen Adult Community Learning team were the first learning provider in Wales, and the UK, to register to deliver the Royal Society for Public Health (RSPH) Infection, Prevention, and Control in Special Procedures for Practitioners.

In November, the new course was delivered for the first time in the UK to 14 practitioners who are tattooists and acupuncturists from the Gwent and Cardiff region. In partnership with Welsh Government, Torfaen Adult Community Learning trialled the new qualification with Dr Sarah Jones (from Welsh Government) who wrote the qualification. On Wednesday (18 December), practitioners taking part in the pilot scheme were awarded a certificate to prove their competence.

In 2020, tattoo artists and those working on body piercing, acupuncture or electrolysis will need a new qualification in Wales. Tougher controls will be brought into tattoo parlours and clinics under the existing Public Health Bill. Once the new legislation becomes law, all practitioners will need to obtain this qualification to get a personal licence, and will be required to demonstrate a knowledge of infection control.
