21-year-old Demi Jenkins is the latest Torfaen Training trainee to successfully setup her own beauty and nails business.
When Demi left school there were many career options available but she was not sure what to do next. A friend recommended speaking with Torfaen Training and shortly after Demi enrolled on a Customer Services Level 1 Traineeship.
During her time with Torfaen Training, Demi had shown an interest in the beauty industry. The Traineeship was then arranged with a local beauty studio in Cwmbran. Demi quickly began to understand and learn the various skills required to work in a busy studio. Demi said:
“I was shown many beauty techniques by experienced staff which made a big difference. There is no substitute for hands on learning in a supervised environment. You absorb information at a much quicker pace.”
Torfaen Training Officer, Lianne Smith frequently met with Demi to ensure all her course work was to the necessary standard. and to check that she had settled in to this new environment. Demi commented:
“I would recommend Torfaen Training to anyone who is looking for a traineeship or apprenticeship. They are experienced, professional, and are always at hand if you need advice; especially if you are unsure about which career path to take.”
It soon became clear that Demi excelled in nails and beauty therapy, with a natural ability in nail art design. Her customer skills had also developed to a high standard which put her in an excellent position for her next career move.
Upon the successful completion of her traineeship, Demi had built up enough confidence to set up her own business. Next, Demi acquired a premises in Abersychan High Street and within a short period of time customers began to visit the studio. There is now a two month waiting list, which goes to show how successful the business has become.
Demi has recently become a finalist at the Welsh Health and Beauty Awards, selected in the category of Outstanding Business of the Year. The salon has also appeared in the '100 salon’s guide' in Wales. Who would have thought a traineeship would lead to such a fantastic outcome.
