16-year-old Dylan Broom from Abersychan has recently represented Swim Wales at the British Summer Nationals where he won a silver medal in the 200m Freestyle (S14) and secured a bronze medal in the 200m Individual Medley (SM14) at his first senior meet.
Dylan's success follows an impressive performance for Swim Wales at the World Para Swim series in Sheffield and Berlin earlier this year, where he won five youth gold medals.
You will find Dylan spends most of his time at Pontypool Active Living centre, swimming for Torfaen Dolphins Performance Centre, training nine sessions a week. Being a member of Swim Wales Para-swim Elite Development Squad, Dylan has recently been awarded £500 through the Mic Morris Talent Development Scheme to purchase new sports equipment as well as receiving free gym membership and access to other leisure facilities provided by Torfaen Leisure Trust. The development scheme ensures that Dylan has access to the training facilities that he needs in order to excel in the sport.
Dylan said: " I am very grateful to receive the award through the Mic Morris Trust. The development scheme is invaluable as I am able to supplement pool work with land training. This improves my strength and conditioning making my stroke more efficient and should put me in good stead for producing faster times in the pool."
"I have been re-selected by Swim Wales for the 2018/19 season in the elite development squad and I hope to be selected by the Great Britain para-swim squad, as I would love to swim in the Tokyo Paralympics in two years’ time."
Dylan has been swimming as far back as he can remember and developed a real passion for it. Inspired by the 2012 London Olympics, watching the achievements of Olympic gold medallist Michael Phelps, that's where he made the decision to join Torfaen Dolphins Performance Squad, saying "The coaches are excellent at the Dolphins, the training is intense, but they ensure the sessions are fun but focused. At times it can be hard to swim mornings and evenings whilst also studying full time in college. However, the support from head coach Ian Rosser alongside the coaching team, my friends within the club and my parents, they all help make this the best sport ever."
The Torfaen Talent Development Scheme is for sportsmen and sportswomen of ages 12 years+ who currently perform, train or compete at a regional and national level and who reside in Torfaen or compete for a Torfaen club.
