Two Torfaen Facebook traders have pleaded guilty to the sale and possession of counterfeit clothes and tobacco.
Darren Anthony of Pontypool and Nicholas Myles of Trevethin were caught selling fake goods in separate investigations by Torfaen’s Trading Standards team.
Mr Anthony was selling fake jackets, jeans and perfumes displaying brands such as Nike, Armani and Chanel on a number of different Facebook sites.
He appeared at Cwmbran Magistrates Court on 1 October 2018 and pleaded guilty to eight charges in relation to the fraudulent use of trademarks.
He was given a 12 month community order including a four months curfew which restricts his movements between 7pm and 7am. He was also instructed to pay a victim surcharge of £85 and costs of £627.88 together with the forfeiture and destruction of the counterfeit items.
Nicholas Myles was found selling counterfeit clothing and a variety of branded tobacco.
He also appeared at Cwmbran Magistrates Court on 1 October and pleaded guilty to 10 charges in relation to the fraudulent use of trademarks. He was given a 12 month community order, including 120 hours of unpaid work, and made to pay a victim surcharge of £85 and costs of £814.45 together with forfeiture and destruction of the counterfeit items.
Councilor Fiona Cross, executive member with responsibility for public protection, said,
“Selling counterfeit goods hits local businesses in the pocket at a time when many are struggling to survive. Generally these products are poor quality and counterfeit tobacco is particularly dangerous as it is often made in filthy conditions.
“Our trading standards team work extremely hard to protect residents and tackle the sale and supply of fake goods. If you are caught selling them you risk fines, imprisonment, and having your financial affairs investigated, so I hope this is a warning to anyone thinking of making some quick cash by selling these items.”
