Filthy & Verminous Premises

Now and again the Council is made aware of premises that have become filthy or verminous, usually by virtue of the lifestyle of the people that live there. Information is often provided by neighbours, Social Services or the Police.

For premises to be filthy or verminous they may have problems of insect or rodent infestation, accumulations of general domestic waste or sewage, usually associated with poor housekeeping.

The Public Health Team has powers under the Public Health Acts to serve formal Notices on the occupiers or owners of such premises, to ensure that they are cleared, cleaned and brought up to an acceptable standard. If the responsible person does not comply with the Notice, the Public Health Team has powers to carry out the necessary works and to reclaim costs from the responsible persons.

Should you be affected by such premises, or want some advice on the matter please do not hesitate to contact the Public Health Team.
